Responsibility and Honor

After taking a look at the first four Commandments from God, we can now take a look at number five. Remember, these and all of God's laws are designed to teach us how to apply the two great principles of loving God and loving each other, Matthew 22:35-40.

If we want a relationship with Jesus, we will keep His commandments. In His own words in John 14:21, “He that hath my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him and will manifest myself to him.”

The Fifth Commandment has to do with the beginning of good relationships by learning responsibility for our own conduct and character, addresses the importance of learning to treat one another with respect and honor, and opens understanding for the importance of the next four Commandments.

From a child's perspective the Fifth Commandment is a guide for yielding to others, proper submission to authority, and the acceptance of mentor influence. It is the first Commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:2-3). Learning this commandment helps children to be rooted in the respect of proper rules, godly traditions, principles and laws.

From a parent's perspective, God places the primary responsibility for teaching the basic principles of life to their children directly on their shoulders. Their success in this is very much dependent on how much they submit to God's instruction and teaching, and how much they show love and respect for Him. Deuteronomy 6:5-7 instructs us how we as parents should focus on this responsibility. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up,” We can only successfully instill these principles in our children when we hold them. Life will simply go better for each generation if we simply obey the commandments.
