Fear is a raw emotion, one that manifests itself in our inner being as a feeling of dread, terror, fright, panic, or any combination of these. It hits us as a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness of a real or imagined danger, evil or pain. When it strikes, it may feel like a raging beast has gained hold of our emotions causing us to react differently than we normally would. If uncontrolled, fear can permeate our life, drowning out any attempts we might muster to use facts and faith in order to reason with self.
The fact is that fear affects both children and adults in dozens of different ways. It is often learned during childhood imaginings or by example from other children or adults. Whether from genuine or fantasized threats in various situations and circumstances, these fears are very real to those who endure them. What is the source of this highly potent spirit of fear? Can fear be successfully resisted and controlled? Are we capable of defeating our fears? Does God know and understand our fears? Does He really want His children to live in fear? Are some of our fears justified? Some fears are indeed healthy, proper and necessary. Healthy fear is simply the desire for self-preservation. Without it, people would not take appropriate caution against dangerous situations or impending injury. But can we take the preservation of ourselves, or our loved ones too far?
There are many resources available today that promise to help individuals overcome their fears and terrors. However, did you know that the Bible has a lot to say on fear and how to handle it?
Throughout the next few postings we will be examining through the Word of God what to do with our fears and how to do it in order to find the solution to resist, control, and defeat them. Then, we can experience freedom to live peacefully in Christ as He wants us all to do!
