A new creation....

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

A new spiritual creation – one in your heart and character begins when “you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22-24). This new man is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him” (Colossians 3:10).

In this way, we are developing spiritual character which we cannot develop solely on our own, for when we try to while in the 'old man' we will eventually succumb to the weaknesses and desires of human nature. Paul shares his experience with this struggle: “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.” Romans 7:18-19).

It is only when God Himself develops in us spiritual character that is holy and righteous that our thinking is reshaped and we have the will and power to resist our nature through Him. Paul's words confirm this, stating that “it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).

What could be more important? If we are in Christ, our Heavenly Father is creating in us His own character and divine nature (2 Peter 1:4)! The Sabbath is the holy time God has set perpetually apart for us to grow closer to Him through study of His Word, personal prayer, and instruction. We should use it to delight in Him by diligently seeking His face and His help in our spiritual development and growth.
